I learned some new tools in ZBrush and this thing is the result. I ended up using masking, panel loops and radial symmetry to create this design. Part... of me thinks it's too uniform and not organic enough, but the other part likes the symmetry and clean lines. So if you feel you are stuck in your designs, I might suggest going "back to school" and learn some new aspect of your design program and then see what happens.

If anyone is interested in the details of this design, let me know. I actually kept some notes as I went. But I used ZBrush so there is no guarantee that the techniques will translate to any other 3D program.

UPDATE: When I went to print this with MakerWare v2.3.2.37 I found problems with the topology. I fixed this in ZBrush and have uploaded a corrected file called helix_ring_MW. This prints fine now in MakerWare and should print fine using ReplicatorG although I haven't tried that yet.

3d model print parameters

I used ReplicatorG to prepare the file, a MakerBot Replicator2 with the Replicator 2 slicing defaults and the following settings with white MakerBot P...LA to do the printing: Infill = 10% Layer Height = 0.200 Shells = 1 Feedrate = 40 Travel Feed = 55 Temperature = 220 I used a raft with full support. It took 6 1/2 hours to print at 90 mm tall. Removing the support structure wasn't as difficult as some of my other things, but it still took over two hours. UPDATE: When I printed the file helix_ring_MW, I used MakerWare to prepare the file using the Standard settings modified as follows: Infill = 10% Layer Height = 0.200 Shells = 1 (only change from Standard) Feedrate = 90 Travel Feed = 150 Temperature = 230 It took just 4 1/2 hours to print at 100 mm tall. The support structure was significantly different and took slightly different techniques to remove it and clean up the print.
